5 Spooky Meals to Try This Holiday Season

Let’s not waste any time diving straight into some spooktacular snacks and meals to try.

Severed finger hot dogs

Severed finger hotdogs are super fun and easy to make, and they are perfect for anyone who is a little short on time and needs to feed a large group.

Here’s how you can make them:

Ingredients:

  • Hot dog buns
  • Ketchup (for blood)
  • Mustard
  • Sliced almonds or small pieces of onion (for fingernails)

Instructions to make:

  • Start by preparing the fingers, frying or cooking your chosen sausages.
  • Once cooked through, take a sharp knife and begin carving in specific details, such as knuckle wrinkles, and a fingernail bed for your sliced almonds or onions.
  • Place the almonds or onions in the carved out space for additional effect. Onions are a more traditional option for a  recipe, but the additional crunch of the almond makes them taste that bit more realistic.
  • Next, grab your knife again and begin making jagged, irregular cuts to make it look like the finger has been torn off.
  • Finally, add the ketchup to the jagged end of your sausages, place it in a bun, and serve.

Monster meatballs

If you are planning on feeding large hoards of guests with zombie-like appetites, monster meatballs are another great option for your creepy cuisine.

Here’s how you can make them:

Ingredients:

  • Salt and pepper
  • Italian seasoning
  • Mozzarella cheese balls (small or cut from a larger ball)
  • Black olives (sliced for eyeballs)
  • Marinara sauce
  • Toothpicks

Instructions to make:

  • Start by baking your Italiano style beef meatballs for 12-15 minutes in the oven at 175°C.
  • Once the meatballs are cooked, let them sit momentarily to allow them to cool. Once they have cooled slightly, place your small mozzarella balls on each meatball, using a toothpick to keep it in place.
  • Allow the heat from the meatballs to melt the mozzarella before adding the olives to create the monster eyes.
  • Next, head your marinara sauce and spoon it over the meatballs, making them look like bloody monster eyes.

Zombie foot meatloaf

Trick or treat, smell my feet, give me something good to eat!

Is there anything more delicious than a tasty piece of Zombie foot?

Okay, it might not sound like the most appetising meal, but this zombie foot meatloaf tastes much better than it looks.

Here’s how you can make it:

Ingredients:

  • 1 egg (as a binder)
  • 1/2 cup bread crumbs
  • 1 small onion (finely chopped)
  • 2 cloves garlic (minced)
  • 2 tablespoons ketchup (for mixing into the meat)
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1/4 cup milk

Toppings and Decorations:

  • Ketchup (for "blood")
  • 1 small onion or sliced almonds (for toenails and bone)
  • Cheese slice (optional for extra detailing)

Instructions to make:

  • Begin by preparing your meatloaf mix, combining your mince, egg, bread crumbs, onion, garlic, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, milk, salt, and pepper in one large bowl.
  • Mix thoroughly until everything is combined well, but don’t overdo it, or you’ll overwork the meat.
  • Once combined, place your meat mix on a baking tray and shape it into a foot, ensuring you define the heel, arch and toes to add detail to later.
  • Once you have your shape in place, add small sliced pieces of onion to create the toenails (or sliced almonds).
  • Now that your foot is complete, bake it in the oven at 190°C for approximately 40-50 minutes.
  • Then, remove the meatloaf and allow it to cool a little before pouring ketchup over it to add extra effects.
  • If you want, you could even go a step further and add a slice of cheese across the top of the foot to show signs of decay.

Frankenstein Burgers

Another fun and spooky recipe you might want to try is Frankenstein burgers. The aim with this recipe is to make the burgers look like Frankenstein’s monster, and they are sure to give your guests a fright at the dinner table.

Here’s how to make them:

Ingredients:

  • Burger buns
  • Sliced cheddar cheese (for the face)
  • Lettuce (for the hair)
  • Black olives (for the eyes)
  • Pickles or jalapeños (for the bolts on the neck)
  • Ketchup and mustard (for decoration)

Instructions to make:

  • Grill or pan-cook your burgers, ensuring they are fully cooked before setting them to one side to cool slightly.
  • At the same time, cut your cheddar cheese into a rectangular shape to resemble Frankenstein’s distinct forehead. You can also make small indents to create a hairline.
  • Next, slice two small circles from your olives and place them on the cheese as his eyes.
  • Then, you can create his mouth and scars, using ketchup and mustard to create the stitching and scars.
  • Chop your lettuce and place it around the burger to reflect Frankenstein’s wild hair before cutting two slices of pickles or jalapenos and sticking them to the burger to act as the bolts.
  • Finally, serve open-topped so that everyone can see your creative masterpiece!

Vampire Steaks

Last but certainly not least, Vampire Steaks are perfect for a spooky and flavourful Halloween dinner.

This dish brings together rich flavours and gory, vampire-themed details.

Here’s how to make them:

Ingredients:

  • 2 cloves garlic (sliced thin for the vampire bite)
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • Red wine or balsamic reduction (for a bloody sauce)
  • Ketchup or hot sauce (for extra blood)

Instructions:

  • Start by marinating your steaks for 30 minutes, using olive oil, salt and pepper, and rosemary and thyme.
  • While your steak is marinating, thinly slice garlic cloves to resemble vampire fangs. Set aside for use later.
  • Heat a large frying pan to medium-high and cook the steaks to your preferred level, whether that be rare, medium-rare, or well done.
  • Leave the steaks to rest for five minutes before slicing, as this allows the steaks to stay tender.
  • Once rested, cut two small punctures into your steak as vampire bite marks, before inserting your pre-cut garlic pieces.
  • Next, drizzle a red wine reduction over the puncture marks to make them look like blood, and add a little ketchup for extra blood.
